555 Olive Center Grand Opening & Pendleton Flats Groundbreaking

The public is invited to an open house and groundbreaking showcasing the results of a $30 million grant aimed at transforming the lives of neighbors, businesses, immigrants and refugees in the paseo gateway neighborhood in the historic northeast community. The open house starts at 11 a.m. On Feb. 16, at the northeast community center at 555 olive street. The groundbreaking on a multi-million dollar apartment complex development will follow.

Stakeholders can visit the open house at the northeast community center’s new community services hub housed in a renovated building on Independence Avenue. The community services center will offer resources to support adult education, empower neighborhood leaders, encourage early literacy, promote financial stability, and welcome the many immigrant and refugee families who call the old northeast home.

“the new northeast community center programs, coordinated by the united way of greater Kansas City, will serve our residents in their new housing, and their neighbors in the surrounding paseo gateway community,” said Ed Lowndes, CEO of the housing authority of Kansas City.

After the open house, there will be a groundbreaking and hard-hat tour at Pendleton Flats, a 30 unit, mixed-income renovation of a three building apartment complex in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood. The apartment complex is part of the choice neighborhoods initiative, a neighborhood revitalization effort made possible through a $30 million grant from the department of housing and urban development (HUD).

The city of Kansas City, Missouri, the housing authority of Kansas City, Missouri, united way of greater Kansas City and inshore Development all partnered to make these projects a reality.

“the support from HUD’s choice neighborhood initiative provides the city and our partners with the rare and exciting opportunity to transform the housing options and service offerings for an entire community,” said Katherine Carttar, the city’s paseo gateway project manager.

Paseo gateway is comprised of the Pendleton Heights, independence plaza, and paseo west neighborhoods.
